As you have likely seen in the media, California Governor Jerry Brown’s budget includes the proposed termination of the state’s enterprise zone program to include elimination of the EZ Hiring Credit, EZ Sales/Use Tax Credit and the EZ Net Interest Deduction for Lenders. While we have endured several challenges to the EZ program in our many years of practicing in this state, this year’s proposal provides us with our largest hurdle yet.

That said, we view this as the beginning of a fight that can be won, but that will take the efforts of everyone who values the EZ program. These efforts will come in the form of a grass-roots campaign to send a message to the legislators in the Assembly and the Senate and to the governor himself that the enterprise zone program is important to their constituents. These messages must come quickly (as the governor would like some resolution by March) and must pointedly indicate how elimination of the program will impact jobs and the economy in a very negative way. Other efforts will include advocacy and lobbying efforts in Sacramento among the legislators. However, the main sway for the legislators will come from their constituent bases.

Please consider using the downloadable letter (below) as a starting point for YOUR letter to the Governor and legislators to keep the EZ program! Thank you!
